Thanks to a donation, Interact Learning Services has been able to have the garden specially designed to cater for people with a disability. This includes ensuring that all areas of the garden are readily accessible, that raised beds are available for people in wheelchairs and that scented plants and flowers are planted to stimulate the senses. The garden will have plots that residents and clients can cultivate, communal recreation areas, an orchard and a native grass reserve. To cater for people whose disabilities are such that they cannot actively garden, areas of the garden have been set aside for just sitting. A water feature is also planned as an aid to relaxation. A unique feature of the garden will be an area that is set aside for native grasses. These grasses are already present on the site, are rare and fragile and not at present cared for. By bringing them into the garden and making their presence a feature they will be both preserved and highlighted. Local group, the "Friends of Darebin", have agreed to establish the native grass zone and to maintain it as a feature. The garden will be based and run on environmentally friendly principles. Rainwater will be collected, a worm farm and compost bins will be constructed and recycled materials will be used in its construction wherever possible. To discuss obtaining a plot in the garden or becoming involved in the project, please contact Mardi Brown, Marketing Manager. Return to Homepage |
